Watercolor is for Everyone!
Why Watercolor?
Watercolor encourages patience, but it also welcomes play. It has a way of turning unexpected drips or blooms into something lovely. It’s easy to set up, lightweight, and full of small surprises every time you paint.
Tips for Getting Started:
- Begin with simple, satisfying projects—a soft sky with a few blotted clouds, or playful color swatches.
- Use smaller paper to keep things manageable, and aim for thicker watercolor paper (140 lb. or heavier) for better results.
- Watercolor Tiles or sectioning your pages with washi tape can create a smaller, less intimidating space to fill.
- Limit your palette to 3–5 colors to start. It simplifies your choices while giving you room to explore mixing.
- Allow layers to dry between sessions, to build richness and depth—and practice in patience...(A low heat hair-dryer can speed things up. We don't need to master all the skills at once).
- Challenge yourself to 10 minutes a day. Copy a tutorial, or just mess around. We learn from exploring, so let yourself play!
- Save your pieces, no matter what you think of them; you'll see later how much you've grown.
- Find a world of short reels and tips online! I usually search "beginner watercolor reel" or "beginner watercolor tutorial" for 2 minute videos to try my hand at.
