Draw first. Add water. See what happens.

The Goldfaber Aqua Watercolor Pencils by Faber-Castell combine the control of a colored pencil with the fluid possibilities of watercolor—one of our personal favorite combinations for sketchbooks, travel journals, illustration, and creative experiments.

This tin of 24 colors gives you a versatile palette for drawing dry, layering color, and then transforming your marks with a wet brush. The soft, highly pigmented cores lay down rich color, while the fully water-soluble pigments blend and soften beautifully when activated with water.

Use them like ordinary colored pencils. Draw directly onto watercolor paper and add water. Pick up pigment from the pencil with a damp brush. Mix techniques on the same page.

There really isn't one right way to begin.

Why We Love Them

They're wonderfully forgiving.

Watercolor can feel like it requires brushes, palettes, water cups, and a certain amount of knowing what you're doing. These let you start somewhere much more familiar: with a pencil.

Make the marks first. Decide what gets water afterward.

That combination of control and unpredictability makes these especially good for sketchbooks and creative practice—and the tin of 24 gives you plenty of color without turning your bag into an entire traveling studio.

Pair them with a little watercolor field journal and you have a remarkably capable art kit that can go almost anywhere.
