Originally created as the cover art for Tokyo Collective’s 2019 anthology Himitsu, this piece explores the collection’s theme of “secret” through Natalie Andrewson’s layered, narrative illustration.

The original artwork appeared on the anthology when it debuted in November 2019. This edition is Natalie’s own hand-printed reworking of the piece, produced in her Los Angeles studio with fluorescent pink, yellow, and federal blue Risograph inks—a new three-color interpretation of the original two-color printing.

Why We Love It

There are layers to this one in more ways than one. An illustration about secrets became an anthology cover in Tokyo, was originally printed in Osaka, and was later revisited by Natalie in Los Angeles with an entirely different palette. We love that the history of the print has become part of its story.

About the Risograph Process

Risograph printing is delightfully imperfect. Each color is printed separately, so slight shifts in registration and occasional roller marks are a natural part of the process. These variations give every print its own character.

About the Artist

Natalie Andrewson is an illustrator, cartoonist, and printmaker known for vibrant, narrative Risograph prints. Inspired by the fantasy and folklore she grew up with among the creeks and woods of North Carolina, she now lives and works in Los Angeles, printing from her Atwater Village studio.
