An early piece from a much bigger story.

Mamuanna holds a special place in Natalie Andrewson’s body of work. One of the first images created for her long-running comic project, the piece was originally printed during her 2016 residency at the SVA RisoLAB, where it marked an important step in her exploration of layered values and the expanded colors they can create in Risograph printing.

Natalie has since returned to the artwork, reprinting it with the inks she uses in her own Los Angeles studio. The result brings a foundational piece of her work forward with renewed color and depth.

Why We Love It

We get to see an artist’s finished work all the time; we don't often get to see a piece that helped shape how she learned to make it. Mamuanna carries a little of that history with it—an early image from Natalie’s comic world and a milestone in the Riso technique that became such an important part of her work.

About the Risograph Process

Risograph printing is delightfully imperfect. Each color is printed separately, so slight shifts in registration and occasional roller marks are a natural part of the process. Layering those colors can also create additional tones and values, allowing a limited set of inks to produce a surprisingly rich palette.

About the Artist

Natalie Andrewson is an illustrator, cartoonist, and printmaker known for vibrant, narrative Risograph prints. Inspired by the fantasy and folklore she grew up with among the creeks and woods of North Carolina, she now lives and works in Los Angeles, printing from her Atwater Village studio.
