A foothill field guide you can wear.

The San Gabriel Foothills Bandana by Mustard Beetle features Elizabeth Jean Younce’s original illustration celebrating the plants, insects, birds, reptiles, and other small inhabitants of Southern California’s foothill ecosystems.

Look closely and you’ll find Datura wrightii, Bush Poppy, California Fuchsia, Baby Blue Eyes, White-Lined Sphinx Moth, Southern California Garden Slender Salamander, Black-Tailed Bumblebee, San Bernardino Ring-Necked Snake, Lesser Goldfinch, and Convergent Ladybeetle woven into the illustrated landscape.

The limited-edition design is hand-screenprinted with eco-friendly dyes on 100% Fair Trade organic cotton. Because each textile is printed by hand, slight variations are part of the process and make every bandana a little different.

At approximately 22 inches square, it can be worn around your neck or in your hair, tied to a bag, tucked into a pocket—or displayed somewhere you can keep finding new creatures in it.

Why We Love It

Part bandana. Part field guide.

This is exactly the kind of pattern that rewards looking closer.

What first appears to be a beautiful botanical print gradually reveals a moth, a salamander, a snake, a bumblebee, a goldfinch—and an entire little foothill community living among the plants.

Wear the ecosystem.
