Every legend looks different from up close.
You joined the crew for a reason.
In Oh Captain, My Captain!, a short-form storytelling RPG by James D’Amato, players build the story of a crew serving under a legendary captain—and explore what happens when admiration meets reality.
Using a deck of open-ended question cards, you'll create your characters, world, captain, and relationships together, connecting your answers into a shared story that reaches its conclusion in about 30 minutes.
No sprawling campaign required. Just gather your crew and find out who you've chosen to follow.
Build the Story as You Play
There's no lengthy worldbuilding session before the game begins.
The world emerges through play.
Players draw cards containing open-ended questions, then use their answers to establish details about their characters, their fellow crew members, and the legendary captain at the center of their story.
Each answer gives the next player something new to build upon, gradually creating a world and history that belong to the whole table.
Who Is Your Captain?
At the heart of the game is a deceptively interesting question:
What happens when you get close enough to really know someone you admire?
Your captain is a living legend—but legends look different depending on who's telling the story.
As the crew's shared history develops, players explore ideas of heroism, admiration, relationships, and reputation, eventually working toward one of three final questions that brings the story to its conclusion.
A Complete RPG in About 30 Minutes
Oh Captain, My Captain! is designed to tell a complete story in roughly 30 minutes, making it an inviting way to play when you don't have an entire evening available.
It's also designed for both ends of the RPG experience spectrum.
Never played an RPG? The question-driven format gives you somewhere concrete to begin.
Been role-playing for years? The open-ended storytelling gives an experienced group plenty of room to create something unexpected.
No level-20 wizardry required.
Although we won't stop you.
Why We Love It
It's a complete short-form RPG. The cards aren't prompts for another game—they are the game.
You build the world together. Characters, relationships, history, and setting emerge through everyone's answers.
It takes about 30 minutes. That's a remarkably small barrier between “want to play something?” and actually playing.
New players can join in. The question-based structure makes collaborative storytelling approachable without requiring RPG experience.
There's something substantial underneath it. Heroism, admiration, reputation, and complicated relationships give a tiny game some surprisingly big territory to explore.
