Why We Love It

Cosmic horror works especially well when it makes you feel very, very small.

Culbard gets to put images around ideas that are almost deliberately too large to picture: minds moving across millennia, civilizations existing beyond human history, and knowledge stretching farther backward and forward than any single life could comprehend.

The result has one of our favorite qualities in speculative fiction—the unsettling realization that opening the door to a bigger universe does not necessarily mean you’re going to like what you find on the other side.
